Honestly in my opinion, for what you are trying to do, don't try to be fancy and have some sort of a minimalist / material design.

It doesn't matter what the application is for. If your application is made with loads of care, can get things done very well, and has a sexy design, people will enjoy it. Just look at apps like Backdrops, Alto's Adventure, Material UI, Fablous - Motivate Me, And loads of other apps that have been featured on the Google Play Store.

Another benefit is that if you have those good designs you could get picked up by one of the billions of "Top 5 best android apps" YouTube videos out there.

Also if there would be a way to link your application to Google, or have some sort of fingerprint / password system for added security.

Obviously you are new, but in my opinion, I would rather take the time to learn how to do all of this (even if it takes months / years) and have people love it. Then shit out something and use the excuse "Oh well I'm new so..." I'm sure that won't be you, but I'm putting it out there.

^This

UX is everything. If people don't like the feel of an app, they won't use it.

This is often the deciding factor for non-techies choosing a phone. If they like the UI of iPhones, they will get an iPhone (excluding those who won't buy because of price) and vice versa.
