Netflix Looking for Executive to Expand Gaming Efforts 05-23-2021, 08:51 AM

Quote:Netflix is looking to hire an executive to oversee an expansion into videogames, a sign it is stepping up its efforts to grow beyond traditional filmed entertainment, according to people familiar with the situation.
-
In recent weeks, Netflix has approached veteran game industry executives about joining the company, the people said. While the company has already dabbled in games—for example, it created a game based on “Stranger Things” with an outside developer—it is looking at boosting its investments in the category.
-
The streaming platform has experimented with interactive video experiences and video games in the past — in 2018, it published Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a Choose Your Own Adventure-style movie, followed by a similarly interactive experience in 2020 for an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt episode. That’s on top of its experience producing series based off video game properties, like Dota, Castlevania, and The Witcher and its spinoffs, as well as upcoming shows based on Magic: The Gathering, Sonic the Hedgehog, and League of Legends.

This is pretty promising for the Netlfix platform and honestly innovative for the Video Game industry. I’m really interested to see what will come of this, especially since Netflix has titles like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch

The articles don't appear to say what genre or styles of games they're looking to expand into. I wonder if they'll do more Choose Your Own Adventure games based on their current or upcoming originals, like they did with Bandersnatch. There's also the Bear Grylls interactive show, which is like a choose your own survival adventure series: Man vs Wild.
It's actually sort of fun choosing the wrong choices, to see what happens to Bear. Poor guy had to film some pretty whacky scenes, and it's addictive trying to see how they filmed the "oh no, you died" parts.
I feel like there are so many companies to choose from in the streaming and gaming industries, and we're spoiled for choice for both. However, I hope they try to do something really unique, and original. There's no point making games that already exist in another form, as that isn't going to create great success going forward. Kids and adult gamers will just choose the franchises and companies they already know and love. However, as with anything new and unique, there might be growing pains.
