Netflix Decline? #1
[Image: _124239497_netflix-nc-002.png]

@Oni previously mentioned Netflix taking a serious, and potentially unrecoverable hit on his thread about Amazon acquiring MGM.

Netflix's rivals are growing more numerous, and are spending more money to compete. Based on Netflix's share prices and subscriber numbers, it looks as though it could be working.

Of course, we are early into the year, and the world is still trying to recover from Covid, and other major events like the war in Ukraine. So how we measure the latest quarters performance for Netflix should take this into consideration.

However, it does look like Netflix need to alter their business model, or make a big purchase (to compete with Marvel/MGM purchases by their competitors).

Code:
Netflix was the first to introduce households to TV-on-tap in 2007, entering popular culture with its avalanche of output, and even spawning the phrase "Netflix and chill" as a euphemism for staying in to have sex. But since then many other streaming services have followed Netflix's lead, including HBO, Disney, Apple and Amazon, making it an increasingly crowded market. "What made Netflix so popular initially was not necessarily its original programming, but the shows it licensed from other production companies, like Friends, giving viewers one convenient place to watch everything they love," says entertainment journalist Tufayel Ahmed. "With companies now taking their shows off the service and putting them on their own streaming platforms, Netflix faces the problem of having to fill the gap." They've done that, launching some hugely successful original output, from the lurid regency romp Bridgerton to the brutal Squid Game, high school comedy Sex Education to the touching drama Afterlife. Sixteen million people signed up in three months at the start of 2020 as coronavirus spread the world and discussing the dubious morality of Tiger King or the historical accuracy of The Crown was a way to switch off from the horror show of the news. But with so many rivals, "all of which are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into competing with Netflix", says Mr Ahmed, it was almost inevitable the company would eventually lose some ground.

On a personal level, I still really like Netflix. I'll be using the service for years to come. However, where it used to be my go-to, #1 stop for streaming, it's now falling down to 2nd or 3rd place, with other services providing me with more consistent content. Netflix cancels shows as quick as it produces them, and I'm just not willing to get involved in a platform that has a high chance of cancelling yet another show I've gotten very invested in. In all, there's at least 9 shows I've enjoyed that have been cancelled. I do not have this issue on any other platform.

Fun fact, the co-founder of Netflix was Marc Randolph, who descended from Edward Bernays. Edward Bernays was a expert in the field of propaganda, working for many companies to promote many things such as female smoking and the 1954 Guatemalan CIA coup.

Maybe that explains why Cuties is still on there.

Netflix is full of actors involved in deep politics, and many of their documentaries promote a narrative that strays away from the truth.
Examples include "Narcos" not even touching (or barely touching) on the US governments involvement in drug trafficking, and a climate change documentary showing multiple walruses falling to their death (despite the actual reason for their deaths being them stalked by a polar bear), and censoring an episode of "Patriot Act" at the request of the Saudi Government.
Also, the corporate culture is highly cutthroat, with supervisors being told to always consider laying off employees.
All of this, combined with the fact that it is designed to be highly addictive , makes Netflix to be a horrible outlet of media.

One could apply this argument to all the streaming platforms. However, pirating isn't the answer in my opinion. I'd still like to support creators/studios that make the content I enjoy. Best way to do that? Pay for the box set etc.

I am not interested in pirating personally but to each their own!

I remember the good old days when Netflix was better AND cheaper Sad I'm really reconsidering keeping it since I barely use it nowadays.

Not really. It depends on what you would describe as best?

I quite like the functionality of the app. It has a few bugs which can irritate the heck out of me, but that doesn't happen very often. However, the selection can be rather limited. I like their originals, though.

How cheap was it for you in the good old days? With exception to Amazon, which is a different kind of beast, most of the streaming services we pay for are all roughly the same price. I don't think it's much more expensive than the next one.

However, their cancelling of shows is driving me up the wall.

If you don't use it much, what's the point in paying for it? You could just use it for 1 month, watch the originals/few shows you want, then cancel your membership. Rinse and repeat as of when you want to see something.

7.99 without tax compared to the 16.49+tax. I share it with 2 family members but even they're using Disney Plus and Prime add ons instead these days. I might just do that. I have a long to watch list but I never get to it anyway

To be fair, that is a pretty massive difference. I know they offer originals now, which they didn't as much back in the old days, so some of the costs may be from that.

I think a lot of people get caught into paying subscriptions they don't need to. There's no charges or reason you couldn't cancel, resubscribe and cancel again, beyond the little bit of effort to click the buttons haha!
