Which would be the most suitable operating system for white hat and black hat hacking.

Backtrack 5 r2 for sure.

install it on a virtual machine.

A hacker always like Linux OS for his work........but a black hat hacker like Metasploit framework with Linux for his purpose. Today in market many type of Linux version come which totally free , a penetration tester like BackTrack OS for his security testing which include most tool of black hat hacker.

Virtual Machine is a software who help u running other OS under one OS without installation.
