Melancholic(?) anime #1
Looking to watch series that have a feeling of pensive sadness permeating them. Not tearjerkers, but more something like a nostalgic summertime small town atmosphere, or a "rainy nighttime" feeling, or something. I guess just "melancholy" is the best word to describe it. Whatever that means to you, I'm interested in shows that fit that description. Off the top of my head, I thought Yosuga no Sora and Girls' Last Tour were good.

I'd recommend giving Heavenly Delusion a try.

I'm not 100% sure what your interpretation is or exactly what you're looking for, but I feel like your description reminded me of Nagi no Asu kara (A Lull in the Sea). It's not a typically melancholy show, and it starts of rather splice of lifey/romancy, but it turns and becomes something else.

Another show I'd recommend is Violet Evergarden. There's a sense of sadness deeply rooted in the main character that she doesn't know how to address or understand. There's definitely some tear-jerk moments but it's not too soul destroying when those happen.

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day probably also fits the bill more accurately.

I actually started a lull in the sea but ended up dropping it. Do you think it's worth watching through if I wasn't into the first couple episodes? Seen Anohana, and I've been meaning to watch Violet Evergreen for while lol. Thanks for the recommendations

You're very welcome! I think Lull in the Sea has this "turning point" where it gets a little darker/sadder, but there's a lot of surface level romantic focus which I wasn't as keen on.

I love Violet Evergarden. The art is stunning, though I did tear up on a couple episodes. Some episodes are better than others, but I like how different each episode is.

If you're interested in something really different, might be worth trying Aku no Hana. If the plot and animation style aren't off-putting, I'd recommend it.

Anime takes place in a decaying town and was the first one to extensively use rotoscoping. By no means a stereotypically good anime, but I was glad I watched it.
