[Mathematics] Weird Lottery Probability: Part 2 #1
I you haven't seen part one, click here.

So, since part 1 was so negative, I thought I might as well give you fgts some hope.

We calculated the chance of any single person winning the lottery as:

Code:
0.0000000715112384

But what about the chances of anyone in the UK winning the lottery?

Code:
0.0000000715112384 * 63500000
= 4.5409636384

That's about a 450% chance of someone winning. Not you, just someone. Go gamble away your life savings.

Oh, and @"Lux":

(03-30-2015, 09:39 PM)Lux Wrote: Good shit. Now calculate the chance of me winning £10 from 4 correct numbers, etc.

Code:
1 / (49*48*47*46)
= 0.0000001966559057
(1/5085024)

4! = 1*2*3*4 = 24

Code:
5085024 / 24
= 211876

So the chances of @"Lux" getting 4 numbers correct is 1/211876. That's one in almost two hundred and twelve thousand. And for that, he'd win £100. ($156)

Do you have better chances at winning at casinos then Lottery? That's might be a interesting thread to make next.

Oh, definitely. There are different games at casinos, but either way, the odds are stacked wayyyyy more against you in lottery.

Fucking bosh one mate, I'll drop a few quid on the lotto and cotch at the pub for the night.

Actually. For the price of 10 pints of bud, what're my odds of winning the slots/raffle?

Well, you could increase your chances of winning the raffle by buying multiple tickets on a game with fewer people playing, like midweek draws with modest jackpots. But I wouldn't risk it. The probability of you winning the millionaire raffle is 1 in over 32 million. (1/number of players)
