Det. Meghan Aguilar, a LAPD spokeswoman, said Hollywood-area officers were called to the area about 11:20 a.m. after police received multiple calls about a man armed with a handgun.
"Some of the comments from those calls indicated he pointed a gun at somebody," Aguilar said.
After finding the man, at least one officer opened fire under still unclear circumstances, Aguilar said. He was later transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The man, described as being in his 40s or 50s, was not immediately identified. Aguilar said what was later determined to be a replica handgun was recovered at the scene.
"Exactly what the suspect did with that handgun that led the officers to fire at him will be determined through watching body-worn video and interviewing the officers and the multiple witnesses that were here for the shooting," she said.

Youve got to be mentally ill or straight up dumb as fuck to do this. This is really sad and such an innocent loss of life. But if he wasn’t messed up in the head or retarded then he had to have been fully aware of his actions.
What do you think?

Pointing a weapon at police and expecting a different result is silly. If law enforcement has a gun pointed at you, you should have your hands up or be on the ground. I'm sure they could have wrestled him to the ground, but why should they risk their life for someone this dumb?
Edit: It looks like he was pointing the knife at them, unless it was the lighter? Still dumb.

I mean, the police aren't in the wrong here. When all you have to go off of on a call is 'a man was spotted pointing a gun at people', you expect an armed suspect. And when that suspect then starts aiming what you believe is a deadly weapon at you, there's no reason you should be risking your life anymore in that situation.
And anybody who claims that you could tell that it wasn't a real gun, there's no way the police could have known for sure. Makeshift firearms do exist, and the police aren't in a position to walk over to the suspect and take a hands-on look at the supposed gun.
It's sad that someone had to die, but when you play stupid games like that, you're going to win stupid prizes.

I can tell you the answer to that one; Don’t rush police with a weapon, even if its fake. They can not tell its fake given the circumstances.

The handgun looks more like a butane lighter.

The news is very disturbing. I do not support the man who pointed a gun towards the law enforcement agency. It certainly is deplorable act. But my question is why did the police shoot to kill? Why couldn't they just shoot to injure him if overpowering him was not possible. These incidents of police high handedness have become very common and it's high time the police is held accountable and if found guilty, punished.

if you are not sure the suspect has a real gun or not, are you going to take that chance? the call described him pointing the “gun” in several people’s face, and the police were worried he could kill someone. can’t be that surprising considering how many mass killings there are nowadays.
