Well, let's see. To a highly popular bank in the Netherlands, the ING Group, 36 million EU is 0.00281469898% of their net worth. To put that in perspective, let's say you make 100k a year. That would be a loss of < 300$ to you.

As for the point I hope was behind that, yes, I do realize that in most of the countries the government is the insurer, but my original point was that individuals don't lose, the bank loses.

That's true, but banks losing are still bad news. Therefore you shouldn't say it doesn't matter.
