Machine learning is all about a machine learning to sort things. For example, it could be sorting different types of animals... dogs, cats, and birds. Imagine those different animals displayed on a chart. They are measured by different dimensions: width, height, weight, color... anything really. There will be distinct groups in the data among the different types of animals:
There will be a few cats and dogs that are indistinguishable, but most of them are distinguished. That can be fixed by measuring the animals in different ways: maybe the food they eat. That is what machine learning does: it finds groups in data.
I drew up a little chart to show an example of the groups of different types of animals. You can definitely see the structure of groups.

RED: Dogs
GREEN: Cats
BLUE: Birds
NOTE: The data is not supposed to be extremely accurate, I just picked what I though was close to real data.
I found this video on Youtube explaining the concept pretty well.
- Dogs - Some are tall and heavy, but some are short and light.
- Cats - Most are short and light, some are short and heavy.
- Birds - Most are small and light, some are large but still light.
