Looking to write a real-time legacy OS #1
I guess people in the Seattle area (where I am at now) are into old shit, so I figured I would go with the flow on this one. I want to write a real-time (all in assembly) OS with recent features (like minimal networking, even if it can be better done with dedicated hardware) in the theme of legacy.

If anybody knows Intel assembly and wants to help work on it, shoot me a PM and we can put together a group.

Things I am going to want help on:
  • Protected mode setup (the GDT and IDT part, the rest is pie)
  • Hard disk reads
  • Networking

Sounds cool as hell, and I wish I could help, but all I know is Ruby, Socket.IO and PHP Sad

Shoot me a PM if this gets on track!
It's often the outcasts, the iconoclasts ... those who have the least to lose because they
don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.

Nice idea xD

As much as I encourage replies to my posts, even after it is considered gravedigging, this is a bit on the retarded side. Spam won't get you very far here, if you want to make a name for yourself thats better than the member you quoted, consider cleaning up your posts.

I've made a few attempts, with each one I get a little further. If you have any knowledge of assembly and want to contribute I would gladly accept the help.

I would gladly help but have no knowledge of assembly.

Might I suggest a few resources you could look into. I find that with programming it becomes much easier once you understand things at the lowest levels. There aren't many lower than assembly (1:1 correlation).

I'm currently beginning to learn Assembly, so when I get a little further I'll let you know and maybe I can help with it if you haven't completely given up by the time Biggrin

I never completely give up on a project. I might scrap the current iteration, but I keep trying until it works (at least partly). Let me know if you need any help learning. Like I said, I would love to have some help, so when you get up to speed give me a shout! Good luck in learning.
