Since my motherboard doesn't support all 32GB of the RAM that I won, and with the Intel bugs, I decided that now is a good time to upgrade.
The RAM is DDR3, so anything past Haswell is out of the question. I'm thinking of getting an FX-8370, and maybe entering @phyrrus9's motherboard giveaway.

So, I have three options. I was originally thinking of doing dual Xeon E5 v3, but v3 uses DDR4, so I need to use v2, which is old.

• 2x Xeon E5 v2, probably 8 cores each (Ivy Bridge EP)
  
• 1x FX-8370
  
• Keep my current CPU, get a new motherboard, and use the extra money on CPU-building-parts-and-stuff
  

If I don't keep my current CPU, I'll give it away here.

EDIT: My current CPU is a quad core Haswell Xeon E3, can't remember which model and I'm not near my desktop

What exactly are you planning to do if I may ask? like are you going to use that system for some video editing, just coding or do you wanna play the latest games on ultra?
Or are you just trying to get the best performance while staying at DDR3?

Programming, some VMs, making games but not playing games, potentially weird web applications, having 500+ tabs open, potentially rendering stuff in Blender or whatever, designing a CPU or two, and doing weird CS stuff. (writing chess engines, AI/ML, trying to solve 4x5 chess, etc)

I'd also like to get the best performance while staying at DDR3 but not spending more money than I have available. (older Xeons are cheap)

As you're aware, Ram Is of utmost Importance for the above- particularly when running simultaneous VMs.

I'd also be looking at growth, that Is, plan ahead for future needs and developments.

Id go with the FX chips, like the 8350. They get a bad reputation by gamers bwacause they arebt gaming cpus. They are workstation cpus. They do vms and processor intesive tasks nicely.

Either or. But the 8350 overclocks better.
The intels do better at single core, but for the price the physical cores of the FX win, especially under heavy load.

Either or. But the 8350 overclocks better.
The intels do better at single core, but for the price the physical cores of the FX win, especially under heavy load.

However, the question is, can it compete against TWO Intel CPUs, with 8 cores each (2 logical per physical)

A dual cpu setup with 16 physical? Probably not. However it depends on the clock speed. Some of those older xeon's were lacking on that. Not a big deal in a server, but in a workstation thats another story.

When looking, I've noticed the lack of decent clock speeds. I'll remember to keep my eye on that
