Using a shell is better than anything else. Linux with virtual machines inside is the way to go.
I hate windows and consider it a zombie but it has it's usage, specially videogames.
I am considering QubesOs.

macOS (X).
It's POSIX certified, so pretty much all Linux programs will work on it. It uses a microkernel (well, it tries to, in practice it's an awkward hybrid) instead of a monolithic one like Linux, it's more customizable than Windows (if you know what you are doing), and it uses BSD utils, which are often better than the GNU counterparts. It also has more consumer support, so you can run things like Affinity and Adobe products.
Windows is mostly only useful for gaming, so pretty much just wasting time.
Don't get me started on Plan9 though... (best OS)

I prefer Windows for video games, and Linux for writing, programming, education, and practically everything else.
