WHY DISCORD IS A TERRIBLE FIT FOR THIS COMMUNITY
1. No Real Encryption
Discord is not end-to-end encrypted. Every message, DM, and attachment sits on their servers in plaintext, readable by staff and accessible to anyone with legal reach into that data.
2. Logging & Retention
Message history, IPs, device fingerprints, and metadata get retained indefinitely unless manually purged. This data is routinely handed over through standard legal process, confirmed in Discord's own transparency reports.
3. Zero Anonymity
Phone verification, email verification, and payment ties (Nitro) link accounts to real identities fast. One OSINT mistake and a whole persona unravels.
4. Ban Waves & Server Seizure
Security-focused servers get flagged and nuked without warning. Admins lose channels, history, and member lists instantly, with zero recourse.
5. Third-Party Dependence
No self-hosting. No control over uptime. No control over API changes that can silently break bots and workflows overnight.
6. Malware & Scam Vector
Nitro scams, fake CDN attachment links, and token grabbers are endemic on the platform, making it one of the most abused apps for credential theft in the wild.
7. Nothing Is Private
Screenshots happen instantly, and content is trivially scraped and archived by third parties outside anyone's control.
BETTER ALTERNATIVES
- Self-hosted Matrix or XMPP with OMEMO
- Onion-routed forums
- A proper Discourse or phpBB instance with real access control and no third-party ownership
Discord is built for gaming voice chat, not operational security.
