LAPD accidentally destroyed their own truck, in attempts of discarding fireworks. Fireworks are illegal to own or sell in Los Angeles.

A stockpile of illegal fireworks detonated following attempts by the Los Angeles Police Department's bomb squad to destroy the explosives. The force of the blast destroyed the department's armored truck, injured 17 people and required the evacuation of nearby homes.

On Wednesday evening, LAPD bomb squad officers were in the process of seizing more than 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks at a home in South Los Angeles, the department said. Some of those fireworks were being stored in the department's armored trailer as a precautionary measure when it exploded.

Those injured in the blast include police officers and other first responders, but none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, according to authorities. The explosion also damaged nearby homes.

I realize the police do their job well to protect the community, but given the level of expertise of the bomb squad, they should've had It under control.

What makes me so exasperated about this whole incident is that they had the cops back off 100 feet, but the conveyance was about 20 feet from homes and businesses, and they did not bother to evacuate the area.

They did not tell anyone in the area what they were going to be doing except for themselves and the helicopters that were filming from overhead.

This was my line of thought too. Was there need for all of these fireworks to be blown up at once too? Could they not have been done in a smaller quantity at a time. They've probably now done more damage, than what a regular user would have done.

Indeed! I wonder how all the people with injuries are doing. Might not have been life threatening, but can still be traumatic.
