Introduction/About Me #1
This is a rare introduction. I dont introduce myself on forums much, but this seems like a nice enough place. Did i mention i like to write?

To begin, I first became interested in computers, about 1994. I was 10. This was when i was introduced to the Apple IIe in primary school. It was Grade 4. Started off by playing games like Oregon Trail, and Asteroids. But i didnt stop there. in 1995 the school upgraded to those first Macintosh computers. I however quickly became very proficient in their use, and by Grade 6 i was the go to kid when problems arose. It was a small school so they didnt have IT staff. Even a simple problem required a "professional" to come down from the school board office.

1996 (when i was about 12) was also when i was first introduced to programming. I was in Scouts and they had a programming badge that i wanted to obtain, so i asked a friend who was a computer programmer for help. He gave me a floppy disk with Borlands Turbo Basic and a binder full of printed pages of commands and functions, gave me a few examples, and left me be. I never wrote huge complex applications, but it got me going/interested.

In 1999 my uncle gave me his old computer after upgrading. This was my first real computer lol. With it came a Student Edition of Visual Basic 4 and he threw in an VB4 book as well. after a few months of coding like crazy I went and showed that programmer friend my progress. He was like, thats great... Heres a full edition of Visual Basic 6 and a book to go along with it. This lead to a couple years of fun at least Smile

1999 was also the year I first got a dialup internet connection. We lived out in the middle of nowhere so it was an astonishing 28.8kbps on a good day. This opened up a ton of opportunity and information. I continued to advance my VB6 skills

2000 I was in grade 10, and i took a programming course. A language that was based on Pascal if i remember correctly, called Object Oriented Turing. Nothing special, but technically the third language. This is also when i started learning HTML and messing a bit with Sub 7 and other security tools.

2001 I joined a site called hackers.com (now defunct) and had installed RedHat linux (5.2, i think). By 2002 I had become a mod, and by 2003, an admin. Within these few years i studied extensively online. Started with Perl, then PHP, then SQL. moved on to LAMPP administration, small networking, etc. not to mention different hacking methods. Also spent time learning the basics of languages like C++, Ruby, Python, and even D (Yes there is a language called D)

In 2004 hackers.com was shuttered. Never had an official reason why, but its my understanding the domain was stolen (The guy who claims to have done it, told me about 4 days before it was done). This is when i started some basic web hosting services, mostly to friends and existing clients (i was doing computer repairs/webdesign offline for locals). I still operate this service to this day and i still have my very first hosting client lol.

Any ways, things died down a bit with my "hacking" career after 2005. didnt spend as much time online (work, lol). In 2007 I went entirely linux. I removed Windows from all my computers. In 2008 i moved and attended school part time from 2008-2010 studying IT concepts like Network Design, Linux Administration, Structured Cabling, Java I and II courses, and Network Security courses. One of my course final marks actually depended on a 3 day hack fest. Class was split into 4 groups, we had to design a network, and then spend 3 days hacking into the other teams networks. fun stuff. Then i started saving money for an adventure

Now, since 2011, I have been backpacking/working around Australia. Doing all kinds of crazy and hard and interesting jobs.

So, for all those who decided to read the book I just wrote... thats my story. Hope ya enjoyed. See ya around...

Hasnt been that long. 4 weeks perhaps? But ive learned a long time ago theres not much point in introducing yourself unless youre pretty sure youre going to stick around a while. and that can take a while to decide some times.

Welcome to the forums Geoff, and it seems like you've almost studied everything about computers.
You should fit in nicely here. :epic:

Ah well theres always more to learn. Has more to do with age than anything else. Im sure many people with ~15 years of experience far exceed my knowledge. ive been lazy. But you dont find many people on these forums that have been around that long lol.

my biggest gap in knowledge i believe to be Windows Servers/Active Directory. There was a time when i hated Windows, and refused to touch the stuff, but looking back i think it would have been smarter to learn that stuff. But maybe in the future lol. In the mean time im not the one to ask about Windows LOL.
