IBM acquires Red Hat for $34 billion #1
Red Hat, probably one of the most famous and successful company providing open source softwares, was recently bought by tech giant IBM. Red Hat is behind the Red Hat linux distro, but also backed projects such as Libre Office, GNOME and Cent OS.

"Red Hat will remain a standalone business unit within IBM, and an IBM spokesperson said that IBM "will remain committed to Red Hat’s open source ethos, its developer community and its open source community relationships." Red Hat will maintain its current leadership team and remain in its current headquarters and facilities. The culture will remain as well—though it's possible IBM and Red Hat may cross-pollinate a bit more than they have in the past."

However fortunate it may me, it's still worrying to have the same year two big corps buying two major open source leaders (Red Hat by IBM, Github by Microsoft).

One of the pleasing aspects of the acquisition Is the following:
Quote:an IBM spokesperson said that IBM "will remain committed to Red Hat’s open source ethos, its developer community and its open source community relationships."

It's good to read not much will change (so far).

Was glad they stated that, the most worrying part was they'd slightly move away from the open-source aspect.

While, as a pretty stable user of Red Hat on my enterprise machines, this came as a surprise. It's good to see they won't be making a very drastic turnover. We'll see how this goes from here!

Fingers crossed It remains as such (open-source).

Companies are renowned to make changes, years after acquisition.

I wonder if Microsoft has done anything with GitHub? I haven't really followed and haven't been using Git as I'm on my break now and just chilling wasting time as usual Biggrin

I hope not, obviously as student benefits ftw.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but to your dismay (and the majority of others), Microsoft has acquired GitHub for 7.5 billion.

Oh I already know that, I mean any changes that they have done to GitHub itself since they took over.

I'm with you now.

The acquisition took place very recently, and It's somewhat too early to make significant changes.
