In terms of the OP, whatever you're satisfied with (and can still afford) should be where you stop.
If you're getting trouble from management where you work, talk to your union rep if you're part of one, HR if you aren't.
I'm not sure about America (or even some parts of Canada), but there's laws in place in Ontario that protect people from prejudice caused by tattoos and piercings, given it isn't an impairment to your work (not implemented for sectors like childcare, for example).
There's still a lot of stig out there for people with tattoos, often from the perspective of customers and not just management. However, timesachanging. Hopefully people will start to think about them as works of art and not a tag.
