How do the feds do it? #1
I already read #swag's guide about staying anonymous while doing a (illegal)activity on the internet, it all seems very clear to me, but I still am curious how the fed's still can catch you, even when you take this much procaution. How can they still find you? Can the only wait for you to make a mistake (accidentally log into your facebook, forget using Tor or doing anything else stupid), or do they have some kind of super program? Can someone give me a little more theory about this. I'm not asking for the exact method because they obviously keep that as a secret.

I think you may be correct. Remember, they probably know a little more than you think they know, because they have the advantages of having websites show their logs. When you are doing (illegal) activity, somehow you are more prone to making mistake (like, as you mentioned: logging in to facebook). Also, in order to be anonymous, it takes a lot of work to keep it that way, because you have to erase parts of WiFi logs, make sure you don't add clues like ? wuz here (although some notorious hackers like to toy with the feds) [this is more of an IP address part], add proxies, and so many other things.

I suggest that if you were to do activity that may become suspected as illegal, plan everything out, INCLUDING consequencial outcomes and the such.

Anyway, happy hacking!

If this is the case, I find it somewhat shocking that the feds can do so little about you while performing an illegal activity. This would mean, that when you perform an illegal activity, following a strict set of predefined actions (which you know of that they keep you anonymous) will be enough to do anything you want?!

I, myself, would not want to nor do I have the required skillset to perform any illegal activity, but I am just curious about why some of the best hackers (according to the news Tongue) do get caught, although they should have enough knowledge of staying anonymous.

Thanks for the reply Smile

Well, the media tend to blow up the situation. For example, they label script kiddies who use RATs as "dangerous hackers" to give people stories to read.

Also, the main reason top notch hackers get caught is because of boasting. Hackers love to boast about their achievements and even participate in hacking competitions, which feds get to know about. They then begin tracking the hackers' activity and this is the main reason of their downfall.

Haha, exactly right about the media. I can just imagine it... "A very dangerous hacker was caught later yesterday. Authorities say that he had control over a WiFi hotspot and was monitoring data passing through and blah, blah, blah..."

If you've heard of Kevin Poulsen, one time he got caught boasting when he accidentally used his real name instead of his hacker name (Dark Dante). To satisfy curiosity, here's a picture of him:

(Also, I resized the image. Didn't know you could do that in BBCode. I am becoming a master Wink)

Keep in mind they can get the records and logs of anything they feel they need for an investigation. Even if you leave no logs behind that they can use to track you, they might be able to track someone down that your a friend of (while anonymous) that you might have given revealing info about yourself to. There is no super program they use but they are extremely good at social engineering and putting pieces of an investigation together. This is what they are trained to do and why they find most people so quickly.

Hope this helps and next time you have a question just ask it in the thread :p
