Hiding behind your nickname? #1
Most people on forums like these don't reveal there real name in order to protect themselves.
How do you think about it? Why do you feel the need to hide or why don't you feel it?

My personal discrepancy at the moment: I rather tend to be cautious with my private information, because I can never take back what I did online and what I have done or told might be visible even after years without any possibility to remove it. But I have done a lot of software projects in the past which I want to be known with my real name. I want to put them under a licence and I want people to know who did this rather than using a nick that everyone could take.

How do you think about this matter?

Why bother hiding your name when you haven't done anything wrong ?
Cyberspace is a dangerous place so you should consider taking precautionary measures including hiding your real name and using a fake alias

In most of the hacking forums or programming forums and even dating sites, people hide their name and its true. In hacking forums they do so as their IP's are logged so they also use proxy and they don't want to reveal their identity as a matter of security. To be true not everyone can be a hacker. An individual must posses some brains to be a hacker and stay anonymous. Again, If hacking is being related then the question about being an ethical hacker or an unethical hacker surely arises. So, they try to use an unique names so they cannot be traced easily just by searching. Most of them have fake Social networking profiles and have limited friends and the their best characteristics is that they never trust anyone.

Another reason for using nicknames is because of Google's PageRank algorithm. You just need to type the name and google does the job for you and finds a lot users with that name, then with a bit ingenuity one can very easily get someone's identity. Believe me I have done this to a guy. I had to do this because I had my personal reasons and a bit of grudge on him, and today I have almost his complete profile like what school he attended, from where he did his bachelor's or masters , what projects he has done , what's his address , where he lives , how many social networking sites he is attached with and I even know his Addictions (Means Smoking or Drugs etc.)

As for you @Deque you are very very clever to name yourself as Deque (Double-Ended Queue) and if one types your name on google he will a million links on Data Structures - Double ended Queue (Tutorials , video , codes etc. etc.), but still I believe it can be found with a lot of hard work and a lot of intelligence (which I don't possess)

Type the following in Google

Code:
inurl:/User-Deque

Quote:Here's a direct link :-
https://www.google.com/search?q=inurl%3A...e&ie=UTF-8

You will get about 127 results and out which we see one Deque as an HC user. If someone suspects then they will suspect the programmers heaven's link.

As for my name Psycho_Coder (Primarily this name I will change my name again to this, someday's back on 6th may I had a very big fight with a very very close friend of mine and that friend is "SHE" and not "HE" so I changed my name to Feurex and now feeling I am a big FOOL). I have told already on a thread in a reply on HC how I got this nickname. I love coding so coder and Psycho because "Being normal is BORING" , you should have some uniqueness and a signature of your own.

I would recommend to keep your name a secret because people could start to DOX you and blackmail you. Altough I'm not a great example for this concept because with a little bit help of google you could find my identity.

You could find my real name in google Wink. I see no point in hiding it, because I don't do anything illegal here.

Back when I was blackhat, keeping my true identity hidden was the number one concern. I did not want to be tied to the alias I was using.

Since I've been posting under Xero and since I've left my past behind me, I no longer find it necessary to hide behind the veil. Shit, someone from HS recently dox'd me, got a dildo and 20 glow in the dark condoms. My point by bring that up? I feel secure.

Thanks for you input. I am still not sure, though.
Yes, I don't do anything illegal. At least to my knowledge.
But like I said this is a one way decision. Once I revealed my information, it is hard or impossible to take it back. So if I realize afterwards that it was a bad idea, for whatever reason, I can't do anything about it.
Or what if my future employer doesn't like what he finds?

@王子様Xero: I've read your story on HS and it was really amusing, but that actually makes me feel more unsafe. Not everyone might use the information to play a nice prank only.
