MAC Filtering is useless now days because you can simply by pass it if you know the MAC of the PC that's on the NETWORK, replacing your own MAC with that of the other PC will grant you instant access.. Not recommended though but it's worth mentioning because can be useful some times in a home network

Hiding the SSID of a network isn't very effective since it is easily picked up by a monitoring NIC. I noticed you brought up the fact that mac filtering isn't very effective but you should make note that hiding the SSID doesn't really help much. Unless the attacker is a complete beginner.
