The fine was imposed following the latest CNIL investigation into Google after receiving complaints against the company in May 2018 by two non-profit organizations—None Of Your Business (NOYB) and La Quadrature du Net (LQDN).

Was reading about this on Reddit earlier this morning. I think it's a great thing that companies are starting to get fined for privacy infractions, however the sad bit is that when someone on Reddit did the math, it only took Google about 4-5 hours to earn back what they were fined. If fines want to ever have any real impact on a companies operations, it needs to be a percentage based fine so that the company actually feels it, rather than just making back the lost cash in a matter of hours.

Google could just as well deny access to their website analytics data to those countries who disagree, which is what I would do. Europe is the only reason GDPR is even a thing. If Europe is that concerned maybe they should stop using Google. More importantly, most of the people who are behind this don't even understand how some of this software works.

Google can afford these fines. Most people who work "for google" are under contract so at the end of the year Google will make it back anyway, so it's not really going to effect them at all. I think the problem lies more with people who use Google's services than with Google itself.
