France is planning to ban the sale of any car that uses petrol or diesel fuel by 2040. The planned ban on fossil fuel vehicles is part of a renewed commitment to the Paris climate deal, reports BBC.
Hybrid cars make up about 3.5% of the French market, with pure electric vehicles accounting for just 1.2%. It is not yet clear what will happen to existing fossil fuel vehicles still in use in 2040. President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate change agreement in June was explicitly named as a factor in France's new vehicle plan. "France has decided to become carbon neutral by 2050 following the U.S. decision," Nicolas Hulot, France's ecology minister, said, adding that the government would have to make investments to meet that target. Poorer households would receive financial assistance to replace older, more polluting vehicles with cleaner ones, he said. Other targets set in the French environmental plan include ending coal power plants by 2022, reducing nuclear power to 50% of total output by 2025, and ending the issuance of new oil and gas exploration licenses.

In my locality, Hybrid cars In the taxi Industry are really starting to populate. I've yet to physically see a fully electric vehicle (not that I know of), but that's where car manufacturing Is heading.

Pretty sure France has a deficit as is. Subsidizing enviro-friendly cars will only worsen it.

There's a lot of money being spent on designing electric cars. I assume, also a lot of competition between companies to make the first electric car that really takes off and becomes the model that sets the trend for such cars in the future. Still, they're designing them within the context of fossil fuel focused nations. What I mean by that is, few places actually have enough charging stations to be practical etc.

I suspect France are going to have a HUGE budget to make this happen. One of the biggest problems is sheer cost and convenience. Why else is the rest of the world still be using a resource they know will run out one day? It costs money and effort to make these huge changes.

And what do you think will happen once it's all gone? Same thing. At least this is planned.

I don't necessarily agree with the move they made, but when you think about it, it's gonna happen sooner or later. Perhaps better while fuel prices aren't sky-high as they will be when supplies dwindle to a state of serious competition.

Also, the date is 23 years away...

Is it bad that I say petrol is better than electric and almost EVERY other alternative fuel? I do get that its France, and I get that they are preparing for the future, but still.

Yeah, of course it is necessary to one day switch over to alternative but thats a pretty close goal, a ban outright is just kind of a bad idea.
