If it's a close friend or immediate family, it's a good chance to see people again. When it's more distant relatives it's just awkward, you haven't seen people in 15 years and you're stuck guessing names.

In my younger days, myself and the boys crashed weddings quite regularly and enjoyed free meals and drinks.

Simply put on a suit, carry an empty gift wrapped box (as the wedding present), and walk In around 30 minutes after the guy at the entrance checks off the Invitations.
