Do we need a "God" to act morally? 05-14-2013, 03:52 AM

I believe we do not need a mythological figure of justification and good will to be able to function as what society deems, "Good." We can easily make our own choices and decide whether or not we want to do what we do, and if anyone follows an unproven, more than likely nonexistent deity to the exact fine point for their morals than I have nothing but pity for them.

It's our own choice to have moral acts. I find that higher powers are useless, and not real.

Absolutely not. I'm a Pantheist, which doesn't believe in a god, and I believe myself to maintain standards that would be characteristic of high morals. Religious 'morals' usually lead to oppression of minority groups and I feel religions actually promote hate in their name. Not publicly, but you don't have Atheist fundamentalists. You do have Christian and Islamic fundamentalists whose goal is to oppress in a sadistic moral system. No thank you.

If you ask me, believing in a god is only reason to act immorally. By looking at science and reason, we act morally.

Those who justify immoral behaviors on the simple fact that they are not of similar beliefs, are close-minded people.
Being morally correct does not require a higher power. If there is, so be it. But in the mean time you need no excuse, just do it.
