Of course, you will need a VPN first. Only the dumbed person will go to the darknet, without including the vpn. Moreover, it is desirable to use a quality service that will not only change your IP every couple of minutes, but also secure and provide good speed. I can not say which one, since I did not use it, but I advise you to try ipvanish review. I read enough positive reviews about him.

Say, if you uninstall your webcam, it's technically impossible to use it, right?
Unless you still plan to use it...

Physically, Tape over your webcam (if you have a built in one) and remove any external ones.

Download Tails to a USB and connect to a VPN before connecting to Tor.
Use NoScript to disable ALL javascript and flash.
Don't download anything, You never know what kind of 0 days a seemingly innocent file might have.
If something looks sketchy, It most likely is sketchy.
Never share your private information (First/Last Name, City, Country, State, Age, Anything that is identifiable.)
If chatting online use a username unique to Tor. Don't use any of the usernames you would use on forums like this one and never use the same username twice.
When you're done browsing close Tor down completely before disconnecting from your VPN and shut your PC/Laptop down, Then remove the USB.

Happy & Safe Browsing!

In fact, this should be done regardless of your online habits.

Why do this in the first place though? I understand it eases paranoia but if they could see from your laptop wouldn't it be compromised? I feel that would be the least of my worries. Unless i'm missing something.....

Yeah.. Unfortunatly a lot of people don't tape their webcam...

It's one of the first things I did when taking my lappies out of the box.

For the average user who simply navigates to Facebook, Twitter etc, there's no cause for concern.

I think you will need some sort of VPN anyway. At least a small extension for your browser from the Google Market, for example https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detai...ajmkdkcaim or something similar. Well, and probably an antivirus, I have a feeling that the whole darknet consists of various viruses =)

I regret to say I'm seeing some of the stupidest comments on here. First of all, you CAN'T visit onion Tor sites without Tor so telling him to never visit without Tor is redundant. And Tor > all VPNs so I wouldn't bother. Most VPNs log your usage anyway and would sell you out for a dime. If you actually trust a VPN doesn't keep logs just because they say they don't, go ahead and do illegal shit on the Dark web, dumbass.

As for putting tape over webcams, how about just unplugging the fucking thing if you're not using it? God damn. I'd be more worried about keyloggers if I were you. Get a key scrambler.

I agree with you. It's the most retarded statement ever to tell someone to not use TOR to connect to an onion link. Make sure you're using a VPN that doesn't log you're shit. There are some exploits that can bypass TOR's routing system though, which is why using a VPN is a great idea. Just as with your webcam, people forget about their mics to.
