Yeah I feel the same way, welcoming people feels odd if you yourself are completely new.
It's something I want to avoid as well. I've been on quite a few different forums, so it's possible.
I don't really feel like telling who I am on the other forums, unless it's necessary by any reason. 
But sure, I always love to get to know new people.
