Cyberpunk 2077 Leaked Source Code & SDKs Released By Hackers #1
If you aren't in the 'Cyberpunk disaster loop', CDPR's studio was hacked into back in Febuary, and the hackers were able to steal loads of data from the studio. And that includes the source code of some of CD Projekt's most popular titles, such as: The Witcher 3, its unreleased version with ray tracing, Thronebreaker, Gwent, and even Cyberpunk 2077.

The source code for Gwent was released to the public by the hackers only a short time after the studio was breached, supposedly to prove the leak's legitimacy. But up until a few days ago, the hackers hadn't released Cyberpunk 2077 yet. But that has now changed.

Quote:Source code folders for Thronebreaker, The Witcher 3, The Witcher 3's re-release with ray tracing, and Cyberpunk 2077 have seemingly been released in encrypted folders, with the group asking for a $10k "donation" to unlock each one. The note also claims that sensitive information such as "CDPR data, company reports, NDA" will not be leaked to the public, and will only be shown to the media. The data dump apparently included unencrypted software development kits (SDKs) for "ps4/ ps5/ switch/ xboxX [sic]" to prove the leak's legitimacy, with some users on 4chan and ResetEra claiming to have accessed these files. SDKs are essentially tools and resources provided by platform holders to help developers, well, develop games for a particular hardware platform.

So this raises some questions like, will the source code be freely available at some point, or will there be fan releases?

The future of Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projekt Red are hanging in the balance right now. Cyberpunk has not hit CDPR's sales target, and their stocks have plummeted. I would say their final hope will be The Witcher 4, which has been confirmed. Best of luck to CDPR.

Despite what a trainwreck it's been, the best thing CDPR can do is focus on the future ahead. Cyberpunk 2077 DLC and Witcher 4 have potential. While this might not be the best news for stockholders, it's hardly the end of CDPR.

I'm of the opinion they did the right thing, in not paying out to the perpetrators. Holding them responsible for what could have been an inside job isn't entirely fair.

So does this mean there could be a community made version of the game that has all the bugs worked out? They should make it open source then charge for the dlc packs

Hypothetically, this would be possible. This is also why the future of CDPR will be reliant on its upcoming games and DLC.

Someone will buy the source code eventually. $10,000 is not a lot when you think about how much time and effort that went into Cyberpunk; No pun intended. So it will only be a matter of time, and if the buyer(s) will even release the source code to the public. There is also the issue of CDPR issuing a copyright claim to anybody who attempts to create a fan made version of the game, so that will put some people off from doing it.
