Computer Science - Types of Software #1
Wikipedia Wrote:Using a musical analogy, hardware is like a musical instrument and software is like the notes played on that instrument.

With this analogy, you can expect sharps, flats, and naturals. These exist, believe it or not.

System Software:

System software is what comes packaged with your OS/Distro. Some examples of system software are: an OS, Device Drivers, Utilities, etc... The purpose of system software is to help run the hardware (the ROM chip, for example).

Application Software:

This type aids the end user (you) in accomplishing specific tasks. This is the kind of software you install after your computer is up and running. Some examples are accounting software, games, and word processors.

Programming Software(Yay!):

Provides tools for developers and programmers to write software and applications in different programming languages. Examples include IDEs and editors like Sublime Text.

Thanks for reading, request some topics and show some love (possible homo?) for more!

Your simplified and straight to the point posts/tutorials, make It a pleasure to read.

I've still come across a handful of tech-savvy computational users, who simply neglect to distinguish the difference between System & Application software.
Thanks for another great contribution.

I'm trying to understand what sort of information one gains from reading this thread
I can't get it
"there's 3 types of software, first type is for system stuff, second is programming stuff, third is the rest"
it looks like you're aiming right now more at quantity rather than quality

Because there's absolutely no need to, it's opinion oriented, and pointless

The software types listed, are factual, accurate and by no means based on opinion.

It may well be pointless to yourself (and rightly so If you're aware of what's documented), but for those new to the computational field and unbeknown to this, I believe It's certainly of benefit.

I'm all for informative posts, but this seems like a cheap one-off. There's no reason it had to be so brief, and only have 3 incredibly broad categories. Why not mention open-source vs closed source? Proprietary vs freeware? Firmware? Drivers?
