What does it take to building your own version of linux as would love to do that in the future?

That would depend entirely on what your goal is, the menu is categorised so once you know what you want to do look under that menu and play around with some of the tools there, see what they do and if you are unsure about them try using <command> -h or man <command> to see exactly what they do and how they work
