great tutorial covers the basics very well, although instead of ettercap I simply use

fping -a -g 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.255 > hosts.txt

just find this a little quicker and it saves the up hosts to a text file for easier scanning

you can also put nmap in xml format.. I suggest using metasploit for scanning too. That is what I do and save it all in database. Just do
db_status
db_connect user:password@Database
db_nmap
hosts
services

Another tool which is good, is Armetige, it's like Metasploit GUI and really easy to use.
I might make a tutorial on it.

I tried this on my network a while ago using Armetige and it found an Apple iPhone, I could never exploit it though
