Are antivirus subscriptions really necessary? #1
I was wondering, if you're an intermediate user and don't download anything unless comes from trustworthy sources, do you think it is necessary to have an antivirus subscription? Also considering that Windows already has one installed.
What do you think? Do you have one?

Best antivirus is common sense. MWB/ESET are alright.

I keep Windows Defender active on my Windows 10 LTSC install. It's built-in to Windows, and receives updates nearly everyday. On Linux, I somewhat harden my kernel and sysctl.conf file.

For the average user, Windows Defender on default settings will do the job. It's not going to interfere with daily operation, ask for a subscription, or give annoying popups.

The quick answer would be "No" the longest one well, it goes in dept there's a whole youtube video by Linus explaining why anti-virus are a waste of money.

I was thinking that probably for an average user it may be helpful as more clearly may distinguish between a threat and a good website/file.
But for an intermediate user who just read the link where he/she is browsing into, I think could be enough to understand if there are risks for viruses and stuff like that.

It would depend if you go to shady sites or not.

i would say so, it does do a fairly decent job at protecting you but at the same time if someone wants to get in they will get in. meaning they will write their malware around the antivirus.

I don't think so. It seems to me that now in the age of modern technology, it should be free.
