Android Oreo: Fuck you, Google #1
So, I updated my phone, and it turns out that the "monthly security update" was a full-blown upgrade to Oreo.
Somehow, on stock, without root or any modifications that would affect this, the update got rid of all my contacts, music, and some images. Also, about half my apps became unusable because of crashes.

Normally, I'd blame this on the phone manufacturer... But I have an Android One phone, which means that the updates are handled by Google, and not the manufacturer...
I have no idea how Google can fuck up an update badly enough to make my phone nearly unusable. After uninstalling applications, and reinstalling some, it's now almost back to normal...
But still, this sucks, and all my 5 contacts are gone. Actually, one is left, but the name is half of one contact's name, and half of the other. On top of that, I don't even like the changes; making the UI brighter is just dumb.

Did this happen to anyone else? Anyone with an Android One phone?

tl;dr: Google fucked up the update enough to delete a bunch of random files on my phone, and cause my apps to crash

Good lord, that's a big time failure/corruption. This Is an excellent example of why I never perform updates, both on my phone and the crappy Windows updates on my PC.

I did It once on my Android phone, and It almost kill It. The device was randomly rebooting and as with yourself, It rendered a few apps unusable. In terms of contacts, nothing was lost though so I decided to hit a factory reset and all was fine thereafter.

As for my PC (during my tests), I cannot handle the annoying "Configuring updates........20% complete....Do not turn off your computer" when performing a Windows update. Aside from rebooting my system and losing all active sessions (VMs etc), It frustrates me just looking at the message. Windows 10 does not have a native feature to disable the updates, so I've stopped the Windows Update service, set my Wi-Fi Metered Connection to "On" and disabled It In the GPE (Group Policy Editor).

How's your phone functioning now?

Somewhat alright

Windows was annoying, sometimes I had to wait overnight for hundreds of updates to complete. However, the only update worse than the Android one that I just got, was on Ubuntu.

Waiting all night for updates? I would've formatted my system (within the hour) just to avoid It. And I'm being serious.

To say I get annoyed with Windows updates Is an understatement. In all seriousness, I literally tense up and start getting anxious with the thought of the probability of corruption and losing my sessions. In terms of your phone, stating the absolute obvious, a factory reset will have It back to It's optimal state. Then again, you need to Install/configure everything from scratch.

That's one of the reasons that I have full system backups of my phone.
I do them once in a while, if something were to break it wouldn't even effect me.

That really sucks. Hopefully this will get you into the practice of backing up your device as much as possible.

Weird, I've updated entire versions (or 2) and not lost contacts/etc. Is this specific to Android One phones?

Might just be specific to mine.
