An IT story from my late stepdad. 09-16-2020, 06:37 AM

A bit of background: My late stepdad was in the airforce in the 70s. He wasn't a pilot, but worked information systems for medical. This was the era of mainframes and terminals.
The story goes, one of the guys in IT wrote what was called the "atomic terminal destroyer." What it would do, is you would specify a terminal id, it would play a little animation of a stick of dynamite (in ascii of course) then take the terminal offline. Well, one day, a genius used this, and forgot to specify a terminal. In this case, that means it defaulted to wildcard, or ALL of the terminals. It took them offline, including a brass presentation, as well as the admin terminal for the mainframe. They had to call out someone from DEC to fix it.
Disclaimer: This is a second hand story from a man who is deceased, Its possible that some details have been embellished or misremembered over the years. I am only telling you this story as it was told to me.
