I think it would be a lot easier having a home tab instead of having to reload the page manually :-)

I agree, two separate tabs. 'Home' and 'Forums'. That would be ideal.

I recommend adding this, or removing the portal page. Having a portal page and not an easy way to come back to it partly ruins the point of a portal page.
