How Has Learning a Linux Distro Positively Impacted You? - Nil - 12-18-2016 One thing that I always here from others is the importance of learning the unix operating system and being proficient with bash. I've always postponed my learning in this area, though. Has anyone here been impacted professionally from understanding the operating system? Is there more value to it than simply server and network management? I've always postponed my learning in this area, though. It's part of my job currently. I work in a Linux shop. I guess that's as good as enough reason to learn anything. A response from someone who doesn't work for a company specializing in Linux but finds use in knowing it would be a nice perspective to hear. However, having that underlying knowledge may help you in your job search. So for example, prior to my current work environment, I spent about 4 years doing end user support. It was primarily windows end user support. Very rarely I'd see a linux or mac system. I used linux as my own system at home, so I had experience with it. The experience helped me on but a rare occasion. However, that experience helped me to get my job at my current employer, and move through the ranks within that company. Many companies utilize linux for backend stuff, whether their frontend utilizes it or not. Even Microsoft utilizes linux for some things within their company. Linux skills are still in high demand, and that demand continues to grow. The pool of skilled and competent linux administrators is still quite shallow, and demand is outweighing supply. RE: How Has Learning a Linux Distro Positively Impacted You? - Dismas - 12-18-2016 I run Sinisterly. So there's that. RE: How Has Learning a Linux Distro Positively Impacted You? - Bish0pQ - 12-18-2016 I have learned the basics of linux and yeah sometimes it helped me out a lot. Especially for backend stuff as Roger said, but I do currently have 2 linux systems installed on my raspberry PI (which I recently acquired) RE: How Has Learning a Linux Distro Positively Impacted You? - Nil - 12-18-2016 (12-18-2016, 01:14 PM)Bish0pQ Wrote: I have learned the basics of linux and yeah sometimes it helped me out a lot. I've always wanted to do some projects with a Raspberry Pi and it seems like the majority of the favored OS's are Linux based. Thanks. RE: How Has Learning a Linux Distro Positively Impacted You? - Dr. Keter - 12-18-2016 Ever since I switched to Linux from Windows, I've been learning a lot more and faster. True, I could have technically learned the same thing on Windows, but living in the terminal has taught me to solve my own problems. I've learned so much more about programming, systems, networking, etc. Not to mention I'm not distracted by vidya games anymore ![]() RE: How Has Learning a Linux Distro Positively Impacted You? - Pikami - 12-18-2016 Some time ago(Like 2 years) I used to use Linux for hacking and I didn't know what I was doing... I was just copying and pasting commands. It looked hard and I didn't bother learning anything. 9 months ago I was forced to learn Linux because I had bought a raspberry pi. After administrating my pi for 9 months I learned a lot. The knowledge helped me understand what an operating system is and helped me with exploiting servers. I started hating windows for it's lack of commands, customization and shitty software installers. I started using CygWin because I love it when everything is in one place and you don't have to search for alternative programs. RE: How Has Learning a Linux Distro Positively Impacted You? - Cyber Warrior - 12-18-2016 Linux is awesome. Basically you can install it on anything. It's not heavy, you have full control over it. It's not hard for administration. Fast, reliable, and once you get used to it, you'll feel the difference by yourself. |
