Update: I'm trying again after Windows fried one of my USBs. Turns out you need two: one for the install iso and one to install on. Oops.

I've done this with Kali and other distros. Do yourself a favor and take your ssd/hardrive out of your machine to eliminate any confusion with partitioning. Run the installation like normal and then just choose the USB for the installation. It will work like any other mass storage device. I do this all the time with SD cards too. Hope this helped.

I just keep a rule of thumb to never fuck with /dev/sda unless I'm in a virtual machine, it hasn't failed me so far.

[Arch] Install on USB? - Byrdonawire - 12-09-2016
Here is a tool that is super easy to use and fast and to the point i you can use it to install any linux distro to usb in seconds. The tool is self explanatory it is windows based. Run the tool you will have to download your arch distro and and add it to the que then let it do the work. USBInstaller creates an installation image on the target drive - it doesn't install a persistent instance of Linux, which is the purpose of this thread. Either way, this was resolved about a month ago.
